An International driver's license is not acceptable for U.S. Sponsored individuals overseas in lieu of a USAREUR driver's license. This requirement applies to either a U.S. Forces-registered vehicle or a vehicle bearing German license plates (e.g., rental vehicles). Be prepared to take the driver's test soon after your arrival overseas.

I'm wondering from others who have taken it (especially those who did in English), what they used to study and prepare? Any good resources? My German isn't that great just yet, but I saw I can take the exam in English.

For instance, one resource I found is this, but the website seems to be from the 1990s, so I'm not so sure about it.
